Mitchell Lee Kolbe hails from Charlotte, North Carolina. He has worked professionally as an artist since age fifteen. As a senior in high school he was one of ten chosen nationally to receive the Art Merit Scholarship in 1973, to study at the prestigious Art Students League of New York City. After completing his studies at the league in 1976, he had his first one-man show in Charlotte, N.C.
